Context for Teaching & Learning

Learning Styles

tools to identify different types of learners in your classroom

Instructional Strategies

synopsis of a course offered by Berkeley Extension and resources defining different methods of instruction to reach your different types of learners

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)

for learners in "the middle", direct instruction in learning strategies and college-bound curriculum

GATE resources

resources for high achievers from a fabulous presentation I attended

Reading resources

low achievers often read significantly below grade level, so overcoming this one obstacle through scaffolding or reading intervention can transform their lives and your classroom

Text-to-Speech Readers

To motivate my students to complete an assignment, I read 1/2 a chapter aloud. The next day my throat hurt too much to repeat the performance, then I remembered that there are built-in tools to read out loud. Then I remembered an online tool, and found a bunch of new ones (not the 1 I remembered)

>>good stuff on creating focus or essential questions

lesson planning that aligns instructional activities, standards and assessment

Rubrics

One of the best and easiest ways to assess student learning. Works best when provided at beginning of assignment/project so students know what will be graded and teacher teaches toward mastery.

Inquiry into Teaching & Learning

Reading List

helpful books that have improved my teaching pedagogy

LAUSD BTSA

A great explanation of each section of the Inquiry process

Read about "action research" and "action learning"

Developing a Focus Question

> Try to make your goal SMART or SMAART

> Anatomy of a Focus Question: a formula to create an inquiry question (shared by Julianna Sike, BUSD BTSA Coordinator)

Lesson Planning

I noticed that the suggested lesson plan format provided by BTSA loosely follows the 5E model of instruction

>> Microsoft Office templates

>> Understanding by Design or backward design lesson planning might be helpful

>> backward design planning tempates

>> I asked if other instructional strategies could be used; it was recommended to follow the model provided for consistency and since it was inclusive of how a lesson should flow
